Hosting Habesha Style: 6 Essentials for the Perfect Ethiopian Get-Together pt.1

Hosting is more than just a social activity in Ethiopian culture, it's a heartfelt tradition.

We Ethiopians thrive in environments where we can entertain, serve, and most importantly, feed our guests. Whether it's a casual gathering or a full-blown celebration, hospitality is at the core of who we are. We take pride in creating spaces where people feel welcome, nourished, and celebrated. So whether you’re planning to host a get-together Habesha style or just learn more about the hosting culture, here are six essentials for the perfect Ethiopian get-together.

1. A Fire Playlist

In my house, the vibe always starts with music. As you're tidying up, setting the table, or getting that wet just right, hit play on some Ethiopian classics. From Aster Aweke to Tamrat Desta, these artists instantly set the tone.

2. Etan (Traditional Incense)

As your guests step through the door, you want them to feel like they’re laying down in their childhood homes on a sunday evening. So once your house is clean, your dishes are prepped, and your playlist is queued, it’s time to set the mood. Grab a piece of freshly fired coal, sprinkle on some etan, and let that smoke do its magic. While you're doing those last-minute touch-ups (you know, fluffing pillows or hiding the laundry), let the scent wrap around your home.

Now light that coal, let the etan flow, and get ready to host like your momma taught you.

7. Kolo

Once your guests are settled in and feeling at home, it’s time to kick off the feasting! And what better way to start than with some kolo? This crunchy roasted barley snack, often mixed with peanuts or chickpeas, is the perfect warm-up. It’s light enough not to spoil anyone’s appetite but tasty enough to get everyone excited for what’s coming next.

This was just the warm-up, part 2 is where the flavors, traditions, and hosting magic really shine.
